SUMMARY

Club Paradise is a 1986 comedy film that revolves around a retired Chicago firefighter, Jack Moniker, who uses his disability payment to buy a partnership in a vacation resort in the Caribbean.

The movie details his trials and tribulations in running the resort and attracting tourists while facing problems with a corrupt government looking to transform the island into a high-end tourist spot.

With the help of a motley group of islanders, Jack works to preserve his piece of paradise.

THE SOCIAL COMMENTARY IN THE FILM

You’re not expecting deep commentary any more than I was… but there are a few reflections on society at large. The themes hit commenting on colonialism, and the political corruption in the Caribbean at the time the film was made, and satirizes the tourism industry as a whole, particularly the promise of something better than what you’ll get. We didn’t have one-star reviews back then to tell us what we were really getting into, and once you were there, you were on your own.

The film does a nice job of poking fun at these ideas. There is also a decently strong wave of standing up to corruption, particularly when all the workers on the island band together.

WHAT I LOVED

The cast. Even though I didn’t appreciate a lot about this movie, I love most of the bigger names that are in this film.

WHAT I DIDN’T

Seeing them in it was also a downer, as it really raised my expectations and did not deliver. Add in that these are some of the people I grew up adoring in comedy world and I barely laughed at this movie.

There’s a joke where Robin goes to scuba dive and – oh oh! – he accidentally brought a helium tank instead of oxygen… No. Really.

Wasted potential is the number one complaint I have, but let’s not forget the lack of a cohesive plot of any sort. LOL

FAVORITE PARTS

By far, my favorite part was the shower scene. And for once I don’t mean that in a gross pervy boy way. It was the highlight for me and I legit laughed at how over the top it was.

This was also true for the absolutely gigantic bag of weed. LOL

OTHER THOUGHTS

If you love this movie, no disrespect. I might have if I’d watched it when it came out. Today, it didn’t stand a chance in hell with me, let alone paradise.
