SUMMARY

After losing his job and custody of his three children, Daniel Hillard disguises himself as a British nanny named Mrs. Doubtfire.

Using this persona, he manages to stay connected with his kids and be involved in their daily lives.

But when both Daniel and his nanny persona must meet different parties at the same restaurant, his secrets may be exposed.

THE SOCIAL COMMENTARY IN THE FILM

The most obvious theme in this film is the complexities of family life and the fractured relationships of Daniel and Miranda, as well as Daniel and his children.

The transformation of Daniel into Mrs. Doubtfire is not only physical. He has to literally learn to become a better person and be an adult. He learns responsibility, empathy, understanding, and actually listens to people.

We also see the importance of communication, compromise, and understanding.

WHAT I LOVED

Robin. This is such a perfect representation of Robin Williams to me and showcases his acting talents on a beautiful level. He adds so much character to his characters. His pain is incredibly believable when he just wants his kids. As a divorced father, this resonated so hard with me. Everyone is well cast. This is a fun cast overall. The kids are fantastic.

I really love the end. There is more heart in the last 10 minutes of this film than all of the rest of it put together. That's not a stab at the rest, but a testament to how good the end of this movie is.

WHAT I DIDN'T

It didn’t hold up. There’s a lot of sexual harassment in this film and holy fuck do they use the fear of trans individuals to not only get laughs but to put characters in legitimate terror. Blah.

This is my least favorite Sally Field character. Miranda has no redeeming qualities until the very, very end and I have no idea why Daniel works so hard to win her back. This is not her fault. It’s shitty writing. She’s one-dimensional and regulated to only being a jerk with a new romance subplot. I’m highly disappointed in how her character is written.

FAVORITE PARTS

My favorite moment is still the meringue mask. “Hellooooooooooooooo.”

OTHER THOUGHTS

I couldn't help but notice Stu isn't seen again after the restaurant. Dude finally took a hint and hoofed it out of there.
