SUMMARY

Two men have their worlds collide unexpectedly when they are each informed they might be the father of a runaway teenage son. The catch? Neither of them knew about the boy's existence.

Jack, a high-strung lawyer, and Dale, a struggling and neurotic writer, embark on a chaotic and comedic journey to find Scott, hoping to save him from his troubled path and to figure out which one of them is his biological father. They encounter various humorous situations and challenges that test their patience, friendship, and their understanding of what it means to be a father.

THE SOCIAL COMMENTARY IN THE FILM

While this movie feels like it never gets going and never has anything to say, it did attempt to hit several themes, some with more success than others. Obviously, we have the theme of possible fatherhood/paternity. Both men are convinced they are the father and want to do whatever is best for the boy. I think they could’ve done much more with this, even in a comedy. Just something that made it feel more realistic.

The themes of Identity and Self-Discovery are evident in Jack, Dale, and Scott. Scott tries so hard to fit in and to win the girl he likes, but she’s always with someone else. Jack and Dale have to confront their own insecurities and past mistakes.

WHAT I LOVED

Not a lot. It was a fine but completely forgettable film. There was nothing that stands out in my head. I know it’s a lighthearted 90s comedy, but it barely ranks on that scale.

WHAT I DIDN'T

You have two of the funniest actors working at the time and there is little to no comedy happening, even when there should be. Everything about this film is just fine. It never excels past fine.

Scott’s mother comes off as being a terrible person, not for promiscuity two decades ago, but for lying to get other people to find her son while she and her husband seemingly do nothing. This was a super weird arc for me.

FAVORITE PARTS

I don’t know if I have any. Maybe when Dale hits on Carrie in the airport, not knowing that’s Jack’s wife... but that's just kind of winning for being the only time I laughed slightly, so not a runaway great moment.

OTHER THOUGHTS

None. The less said the better.
